যুদ্ধ শুরু হওয়ার পর থেকে প্রেসিডেন্ট জেলেনস্কি পশ্চিমা নেতাদের সঙ্গে নিয়মিত যোগাযোগ রেখেছেন। তবে তাকে হোয়াইট হাউজে অতিথি হিসেবে স্বাগত জানিয়ে প্রেসিডেন্ট বাইডেন এরকম একটা ইঙ্গিত দিতে চান যে, এই যুদ্ধে যত সময়ই লাগুক, ওয়াশিংটন ইউক্রেনকে সমর্থন যুগিয়ে যেতে অঙ্গীকারবদ্ধ।

প্রেসিডেন্ট জেলেনস্কির সফর শুরু হওয়ার আগে হোয়াইট হাউজের এক ব্রিফিং এ ইউক্রেনের জন্য দুইশো কোটি ডলারের এক নতুন নিরাপত্তা সহায়তার ঘোষণা দেয়া হয়।
এই পরিকল্পনার আওতায় ইউক্রেনকে অত্যাধুনিক প্যাট্রিয়ট মিসাইল ব্যাটারি দেয়া হবে। এটি খুবই অত্যাধুনিক এক বিমান প্রতিরক্ষা ব্যবস্থা। এর মাধ্যমে ইউক্রেনের শহরগুলোকে রুশ ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র এবং ড্রোন হামলা থেকে রক্ষা করা সম্ভব হবে।
রাশিয়ার এসব হামলাকে কর্মকর্তারা ইউক্রেনের মনোবল ভেঙে দেয়ার চেষ্টা বলে বর্ণনা করেন। এসব হামলার ফলে তীব্র শীতের মৌসুমে ইউক্রেনের লাখ লাখ মানুষের বাড়িতে বিদ্যুৎ নেই, ঘর গরম করার কোন ব্যবস্থা নেই।
প্রেসিডেন্ট জেলেনস্কি রাশিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে লড়তে তার দেশকে দূর পাল্লার ক্ষেপণাস্ত্র দেয়ার জন্য অনেক দিন ধরেই দাবি জানাচ্ছেন। কিন্তু এরকম অস্ত্র তিনি পাবেন বলে মনে হয় না।
কংগ্রেসে ভাষণ দেয়ার সময় তিনি হয়তো তার দেশের অবকাঠামোর ওপর রাশিয়ার হামলার কথা উল্লেখ করে আরও অস্ত্র চাইবেন।
কংগ্রেসের অনেক রিপাবলিকান সদস্য অবশ্য এভাবে উদার হাতে ইউক্রেনকে সামরিক সহায়তা দিয়ে যাওয়ার বিপক্ষে।
প্রেসিডেন্ট জেলেনস্কিকে মাত্র গতকালই ইউক্রেনের বাখমুট শহরে দেখা গিয়েছিল যুদ্ধের পোশাকে। গত কদিন ধরে এই শহরের নিয়ন্ত্রণ নিয়ে তীব্র লড়াই চলছে। সেখানে তিনি সৈনিকদের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করেন এবং তাদের মধ্যে পুরস্কার বিতরণ করেন। সৈনিকরা মি. জেলেনস্কিকে তাদের সই করা একটি ইউক্রেনীয় পতাকা দিয়ে এটি প্রেসিডেন্ট বাইডেন এবং মার্কিন কংগ্রেসকে দিতে বলেন।
